Tourism highlights
England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland make up the United Kingdom and offer a wide diversity of places to see, experience and enjoy. We have listed a few of our favourites as suggestions.
London as the capital, offers a long list of attractions. We recommend Westminster to view the fabulous architecture of the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, the River Thames running alongside and the London Eye for great views. Reserve time for the street entertainment in Covent Garden in the West End, close to the theatres and the great choice of shows. In the City is the Tower of London, home to the priceless Crown Jewels and the iconic St Paul’s Cathedral and don’t forget the many museums and galleries.
In the south, the coast hugging counties of Devon and Cornwall are home to rich cream teas, craggy coves, crafts, the famous Cornish pasty and memorable walks along the coast path to the famous landmark of Lands End.
Stonehenge is one of Britain’s most famous sightseeing spots, dating back to 3000BC and part of an UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Visit the homes of the annual boat race. The University cities of Oxford and Cambridge will not disappoint and if you have time, take a punt along the river.
The quaint, honey-coloured towns and villages of the Cotswolds look as though they date back to another era with Bleinhem Palace nearby and also convenient for great designer shopping at Bicester Village Outlet.
Peaceful, wild and surrounded by misty mountains, Lake Windermere in the Lake District National Park in Cumbria is Britain’s largest natural lake and an ideal place for a cruise while a trip to the Yorkshire Dales offers a scenic backdrop for exhilarating walks and breathtaking vistas.
The smallest of mainland Britain’s component countries, Wales, offers mountain ranges, lush valleys, a ragged coastline, old-fashioned market towns and over 400 castles and fortifications. It is renowned for its male voice choirs, tightly packed pit villages and heritage railways. Cardiff is its cosmopolitan city, while the small national book town of Hay-on Wye is the hub for the Hay Festival. The mountains of the Snowdonia National Park in the north are one of the most popular places to visit.
Scotland is the U.K.’s northernmost country with mountain wildernesses, lochs, glacial valleys, fairytale castles, museums and galleries. It is also famous for golf, the game first played at the Old Course at St Andrews in the 1400s, whisky distilleries and Gretna Green. Key cities include Edinburgh, the capital and Glasgow.
Separated by the Irish Sea, Northern Ireland is known for its Norman castles, glacial valleys and mountains. The capital city Belfast is home to the political murals of the 20th-century while its Titanic Quarter showcases the redeveloped dockyards where the famous ship was built. Titanic Belfast is the city’s iconic visitor attraction. For cycling and driving, the Causeway Coastal Route provides dramatic scenery while a variety of walking routes take advantage of spectacular natural wonders and manmade structures
